Without goals, you’ll lack focus and attention. With goals, you can create a better version of yourself.
How To Be A Goal Setting Ninja
Before you even start setting goals you need to address your mindset. One of my favorite quotes by Henry Ford is…
“Whether you think you can, or you think you can’t – you’re right”
I used to have a negative mindset that kept me from living the life that I always wanted to. The things that helped me shift my mindset and achieve my goals where…

So once you have the right mindset you need to make sure that you are setting goals the RIGHT way. Here are some tips to help you.
Set Clear Goals
Make sure your goals are clear. Having clear goals helps to give your goals momentum and purpose. Goals need to be SMART.
Smart goals are;
- Specific- Exactly what do you want to accomplish?
- Measurable- How will you know that you’ve accomplished it?
- Achievable- Can you do this? Is it achievable?
- Relevant- Is the goal worth doing?
- Time-Bound- What is your deadline to meet this goal?
Clear goals need to not only be SMART but they should also represent your values.
Do you value health and wellness? A clear goal might be to exercise 3 times a week for 30 minutes for one year.
Write It Down
Be sure to write your goals down. Writing them down helps to clarify your intentions. I have to write things down for them to be more real to me and I’m more likely to achieve a goal if I have written it down.
It also helps you track your progress. Seeing how far we’ve come can be motivating.
State Your Why
Knowing “why” you want to accomplish your goal helps you stay focused on your goal. It also helps you to prioritize your action steps.
To determine your “why” figure out what motivates or excites you.
Let’s say your goal is to exercise 3 times a week for 30 minutes for one year.
Why is this important to you?
Do you want to live a healthier lifestyle for your kids? Do you want to make sure your overall health is good?
Make sure that your “why” aligns with your core values. Aligning your why with your core values helps you change your mindset and helps you succeed.
Develop A Strategy
How do you plan on reaching your goal? Having a good strategy will help you accomplish your goals faster.
Going back to the exercise goal, how do you plan on making sure you exercise 3 times a week for 30 minutes?
Waking up before work to exercise? After work? In other words, how to plan to accomplish your goal.
Break It Down Into Action Steps
It’s easy to get discouraged if your goals seem impossible. Break them down so that it’s more manageable.
Yearly goals can be broken down into quarterly and monthly goals. Monthly goals can be broken down to weekly, daily goals and smaller goals can be broken down into action steps.
Small action steps are easier and more realistic to accomplish.
Figure Out Roadblocks/Obstacles
What roadblocks or obstacles might get in the way of you achieving your goal?
- Not being clear enough?
- Not allowing yourself enough time?
- Is your goal unrealistic?
- Is it really important to you?
- Does your routine fit with your goal?
- Negative mindset?
- Trying to do too much?
- Surrounded by pessimistic people?
- Making excuses?
How will you overcome roadblocks?
Rewarding yourself when you’ve reached a milestone can help to keep your momentum going.
Have you ever heard of a habit loop? Charles Duhigg author of The Power Of Habit says that if you find the right reward you can build habit loops that last a long time.
What is a habit loop?
A habit loop has three parts;
- Cue- Trigger for the behavior
- Routine- The habit itself
- Reward- Positive feedback
Why is this important for setting goals? Because setting up rewards provides positive feedback that will help you to create a good habit, therefore, helping you to meet your goal.
So let’s see it in action with our working out goal.
- Cue- Waking up
- Routine- Start Yoga routine
- Reward-Eat a piece of chocolate
Setting up rewards can help you look forward to meeting your goals and make it more likely that you’ll accomplish it.
Sometimes it helps to have an accountability partner. A person that will help you stay on track with your goals. Positive peer pressure can help you stay motivated.
