Have you ever created a newspaper for your kids? It’s a really fun way for kids to get “their” news across. Or any news at all!
My kids love have loved this project so I thought I would share it with you in hopes that your kids love it too!
When the COVID shutdown began it was a BIG change for us, and probably you as well. In order to keep my kids busy, we tried to come up with different ways to be creative and prevent boredom.
During that time my kids decided to create a newspaper. They wanted to share what was going on in their life and I loved that it was a way for them to document their time in quarantine. For weeks my kids drew out their own newspaper and wrote articles about things that were going on in their life.
I loved it and all of our friends and family loved it too. So after I realized that this was going to be a permanent weekly thing that we do, I decided to create a template for them to use.
And now I’d love to share it with you. It was a lot of fun to create and my kids enjoyed using it.
I hope your kids do too!
What Is In The Template
I’m glad you asked! It is 9 pages of newspaper creating fun!
The first page of the Weekly Gazette is where they’ll put their most important front-page stories. There are spots for two stories, a quote, and a picture with a caption.
The second page has more stories and an AD spot (gotta make that money, right? ha!)
The third page is a book review, joke of the week and the weather forecast.
The fourth page is a recipe of the week.
The fifth page is an advice column and a tips page.
Pages sixth through ninth are a comic strip.
How To Use The Template
In order to best use this template, I recommend that you download Adobe Acrobat. It’s FREE and it’ll make using this template so much easier to use. You can edit it right from Acrobat.
In the link below, you’ll click the button that says DOWNLOAD HERE. I think it would be best to do this from a computer or laptop.
After you’ve downloaded it, it’ll either come up automatically in Acrobat or you can find the file in your downloads. Once you open it you’ll see the template.
On the top, right-hand side of Acrobat, they’ll be a little magnifying glass icon with the words “Find Tools.” Click on that and the tools bar will show up.
Next, you’ll click on Edit PDF. When you do this you’ll see little boxes around the things you can edit. You can change the date, the name of the paper, and put the headlines in.
I like to ask them ahead of time what they want their headlines to be and then type it in before printing.
Once you have everything looking like you want, print it and they’re ready to go!
I’ve included a template that has the “headline goes here” type so you’ll know exactly what to put there. I will also include a blank template with no words or pictures, in case you’d rather have that.
Share Your Newspaper
I hope your kids come up with amazing newspapers! If you’d like to share it with me (I’d definitely love to see it) then you can hashtag me on Instagram using the hashtag #iheartsimplicitynewspaper
